Merritt Park Place's next district sign is being paid for by the wine strolls on N. Grove Street. Community Advocacy for Merritt Island held a Sip & Stroll in the district on April 24, 2026. A CAMI recap of a Merritt Park Place Sip & Stroll reports more than 150 participants and says the money raised will go toward "the installation of a brand-new district sign." The next one, the Spirits & Spooks edition, runs Friday, October 23, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Most island residents know the district only as the blocks they pass on SR 520 or Courtenay Parkway. It deserves a closer look this month. The county's redevelopment agency now counts its Merritt Park Place package as finished. The newest additions come from a nonprofit, a few business owners and anyone willing to buy a ticket.
Merritt Park Place was founded in 1926 as the first planned neighborhood on Merritt Island. Merritt Avenue bounds it on the north, State Road 520 on the south and Courtenay Parkway on the east. Florida Today described its original character as "narrow streets, shady trees and flowery yards." Over time it was rezoned for mixed use, and today small businesses sit next to homes on N. Grove Street, McLeod Street and Tangerine Avenue.
In a 2013 Florida Today feature, the head of the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency described what the district could become.
"the pedestrian-friendly 'downtown' Merritt Island never really has had"
Greg Lugar, then executive director of the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency, as paraphrased and quoted by Florida Today in December 2013
Even then, Lugar gave much of the credit to business owners. "I think there has been a group of business owners who actually went out and tried to get signs, to get beautification done, and it started long ago," he said. Brandt Ronat & Co., an advertising firm, has had its headquarters in a heritage building on McLeod Street since July 2006. La Casa, the assisted living community founded by a family that grew citrus on the island for decades, grew into a small cluster of service providers inside the district. La Casa still lists its address as 220 N. Grove St. and calls itself part of Historic Merritt Park Place.
That 2013 quote about owners chasing signs is the earliest record here of the district's pattern. Thirteen years later, the next sign is once again a community project.
The redevelopment agency has done real work here. Its earlier infrastructure project brought new sewers, better drainage, resurfaced streets, irrigation lines, landscaping and period-style lighting to the district. The agency's FY2025 annual report, submitted in March 2026, lists Merritt Park Place under "Projects Completed." The project is valued at roughly $1 million in agency funds and covered streetscape improvements, septic-to-sewer conversion, safety lighting, signage, parking improvements and a stormwater management plan.
Two loose ends sit outside that completed package.
The first is the agency's commercial facade grant program. It offered matching money for storefront upgrades, historic restoration, sign-code compliance and design services, and its page shows finished projects at 60 McLeod and 123 Tangerine. The board paused new applications on December 8, 2022.
The second is the district's parking lot. The agency's meeting records show a negotiation that has lasted more than a year:
| Meeting | What the record shows |
|---|---|
| June 26, 2025 | Appraisal of $140,000. The owner was asking $200,000, and the county was negotiating. |
| September 25, 2025 | The board told staff to keep pursuing the lot at $200,000 while a second appraisal was completed. The owner was willing to hold off on selling to anyone else. |
| October 23, 2025 | The later appraisal came in at $245,000 if acquired as vacant land. The owner was still engaged. |
No public record found reports a closing. The May 28, 2026 agenda listed only a verbal project-status report. The July 23, 2026 meeting was cancelled, and the next regular meeting was set for August 27. As of October 2026, the parking lot is still an open question.
Community Advocacy for Merritt Island formed in 2022 as a nonpartisan 501(c)(3). Its mission covers arts, conservation, beautification and education. Its 2026 calendar puts Merritt Park Place on the schedule in both spring and fall.
The April 24 Sip & Stroll ran from 4 to 7 p.m., started at Synergy Float Spa at 264 N. Grove St., and gave guests tasting stops and a route map. CAMI's recap of a Merritt Park Place Sip & Stroll counts more than 150 participants and directs the proceeds to the district sign. The group's other work shows what kind of organization it is. Its 2026 trash cleanup filled more than 60 bags, about 1,200 pounds, with help from 48 volunteers. Its Barbecue, Bourbon, and Blues auction raised more than $7,000 for the island's Holiday Illumination Celebration.
The sign has not been installed yet. CAMI describes the stroll money as going toward installation, so the sign is still a fundraising goal. That gives the October 23 stroll a clear purpose.
Spirits & Spooks starts at Synergy Float Spa. You check in there, pick up a wine glass and then walk N. Grove Street, McLeod Street and Tangerine Avenue. Tickets are sold through CAMI's Zeffy page. Ticket holders get a map of participating locations, and the full list of stops is not published. These businesses are confirmed in the district:
The stroll ends at 7 p.m., and Hola stays open until 9 on Fridays. That makes dinner on Grove Street the easy next step after the walk.
Merritt Island's other big October events are also community-hosted and free or low cost.
| Date | Event | Where | Host |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat., Oct. 10, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. | Inaugural Fall Festival | Veterans Memorial Park amphitheater, 400 S. Sykes Creek Pkwy. | Brevard Veterans Memorial Center and the Melvin Morris Veterans Assistance Program |
| Oct. 17 to 30 | Pumpkin patch | 65 Needle Blvd. | Grace United Methodist Church |
| Fri., Oct. 23, 4 to 7 p.m. | Spirits & Spooks Sip & Stroll | Merritt Park Place | Community Advocacy for Merritt Island |
The Fall Festival honors veterans and active-duty service members. It includes a car show, arts and crafts vendors, food trucks and pumpkin decorating. The SpaceX-sponsored stage opens at 2 p.m. with John McDonald and the Mango Men. The night closes with the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra performing "Red, White, and Brass," a patriotic program honoring Brevard County veterans. Admission is free, and seating is on the lawn, so bring a blanket or a chair. The pumpkin patch also offers family photo spots.
The causeway, meanwhile, keeps adding restaurants on its own schedule. The Sushimo opened at 125 E. Merritt Island Causeway this summer. It serves Japanese food and sushi for dine-in and takeout and seats more than 100. The Chick-fil-A at 785 E. Merritt Island Causeway reopened September 15 after a temporary closure for drive-thru improvements. Crossroads Jerk Center is planned for Merritt Square Mall at 777 E. Merritt Island Causeway. In early September, co-owner Lora Cross told What Now, "We'll be opening next month," and described indoor and outdoor seating and live entertainment seven days a week. Until the restaurant announces a date, October is only the target.
Few places on the island combine the causeway's new restaurants with the community-run evenings of the district a block or two north. Merritt Park Place has both a street grid laid out in 1926 and a nonprofit raising money for its sign. If the stroll keeps drawing crowds of 150 or more, the district could have its sign before the county closes on its parking lot.
